Biography[]
Oskar Steiger was born in Landsberg, Bavaria, German Empire to a Catholic family, and he served in the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany during World War II. Steiger was awarded the Iron Cross for bravery during the first few years of the war, and he was later sent to work with the OKH in Berlin. He was appointed to serve under Adolf Hitler's chief of staff, Alfred Jodl, and he began to study the American general George S. Patton in early 1943 in order to provide intelligence to Afrika Korps commander Erwin Rommel on how to defeat him. Steiger studied Patton for years and developed an interest in him, noting how he was interested in ancient mythology, his inspirational ways of leading an army, his study of military history, and his strategies. In April 1945, Steiger was forced to burn the files on Patton when the Soviet Red Army advanced on Berlin, and he fled the city during the Battle of Berlin.
