Biography[]
Schomburg was born in China in 1897. He joined the Imperial German Navy and fought in World War I. By 1936, he was a Kriegsmarine officer who commanded the Wurrfler, the submarine which was used by Oberst Herman Dietrich to intercept the Bantu Wind, allowing the Germans to obtain the Ark of the Covenant. Thereafter, the U-boat traveled to Geheimhaven, a secret Nazi stronghold on an island near Crete. Schomburg was present on the conning tower when Belloq persuaded Dietrich to open the Ark at the island rather than waiting until they were back in Berlin. The fate of him and his crew following this is unknown.
During World War II, he fought in the Battle of the Atlantic. After the war, he retired from service. He died on 18 June 1973, at the age of 75.
