
Oskar Potiorek (20 November 1853 – 17 December 1933) was the Governor of Bosnia from 1911 to 1914 under Austria-Hungary. He led Austro-Hungarian forces during the Serbian Campaign of 1914 of World War I.
Biography[]
Potiorek was born in Bad Bleiberg in the Province of Carinthia, Austria-Hungary, and joined the Austro-Hungarian general staff in 1879. He was an ethnic Slovene. In 1906 he became the Chief-of-Staff for Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and in 1910 he was made Inspector-General of Sarajevo. He held the title of governor until the start of World War I in 1914, having been dismissed after failing to defeat Serbia three times, leading to major defeats. He was replaced by Archduke Eugen of Austria, and died in Klagenfurt at the age of 80.
