Orville Hitchcock Platt (19 July 1827-21 April 1905) was a Republican US Senator from Connecticut from 4 March 1879 to 21 April 1905, succeeding William Henry Barnum and preceding Frank B. Brandegee.

Biography[]

Orville Hitchcock Platt was born in Washington, Connecticut in 1827, and he became a lawyer in Towanda, Pennsylvania before relocating to Meriden, Connecticut in 1850. He served as Secretary of State of Connecticut from 1857 to 1858, in the state house in 1864 and 1869, as state's attorney for New Haven County from 1877 to 1879, and in the US Senate from 1879 to 1905. He was considered a reactionary by labor organizations, and he opposed the Sherman Antitrust Act. He died in 1905.
