Orsamus Cook Merrill

Orsamus Cook Merrill (18 June 1775-12 April 1865) was a member of the US House of Representatives (DR-VT 1) from 4 March 1817 to 12 January 1820, succeeding Daniel Chipman and preceding Rollin Carolas Mallary.

Biography[]

Orsamus Cook Merrill was born in Farmington, Connecticut in 1775, and he moved to Bennington, Vermont in 1791 to become a printer. He became a lawyer in 1805 and served as postmaster from 1809 to 1812, as a US Army lieutenant-colonel during the War of 1812, in the US House of Representatives from 1817 to 1820, in the state house from 1822 to 1823, and as probate judge from 1841 to 1847. Merrill died in 1865.
