Orissa was an Indian princely state located in the eastern Indian Subcontinent. During the mid-17th century, Shah Jahan of the Mughal Empire created Orissa as a subah (province), and it was a puppet of the Bengal Subah for decades. In 1751, the region was ceded to the Maratha Confederacy, maintaining some autonomy. Orissa was conquered by the United Kingdom in 1803 after the Second Anglo-Maratha War.
