Oreoi, formerly known as Oreos or Histiaea, is a village in Euboea, Greece. Oreus was colonized by the Attican Greeks, and it became one of the four major cities on the island during Homer's time. In 446 BC, Histiaea played a key role in a revolt against Athenian authority on the island, and Pericles had its inhabitants deported to Thessaly and replaced by 2,000 Athenian colonists who renamed the town to Oreos. At the end of the Peloponnesian War, Oreos became a Spartan subject, and a portion of its ancient inhabitants were restored, while the Athenians were expelled. Before the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC, Oreos revolted against Sparta, and, in 341 BC, the people of Oreos welcomed Philip II of Macedon as a liberator. In 207 BC, during the First Macedonian War, its Macedonian garrison betrayed Oreos to the Roman Republic, and it was declared free in 196 BC. In 2011, Oreoi had 3,107 residents.
