Oren E. Long

Oren Ethelbirt Long (4 March 1889-6 May 1965) was the Democratic Territorial Governor of Hawaii from 8 May 1951 to 28 February 1953 (succeeding Ingram Stainback and preceding Samuel Wilder King) and a US Senator from 21 August 1959 to 3 January 1963 (preceding Dan Inouye).

Biography[]

Oren Ethelbirt Long was born in Altoona, Kansas in 1889, and he came to Hawaii in 1917 as a social worker in Hilo before becoming a school superintendent. He served as territorial governor from 1951 to 1953, in the territorial senate from 1956 to 1959, and in the US Senate from 1959 to 1963; he was Hawaii's only non-Asian senator until Brian Schatz's appointment in 2012. He died in 1965.
