Oregon is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, with Salem being the capital and Portland the largest city. The state was one of the major regions involved in the fur trade during the 19th century, and it was jointly ruled by the United Kingdom (as a part of Canada) and the United States until 1843, when the state gained an autonomous government, and in 1859 Oregon became a state after eleven years of being a territory. In 2015, the state had a population of 4,028,977 people.
