Ordonno I of Asturias (1 January 830-27 May 866) was the king of Asturias from 850 to 866, succeeding Ranimiro I and preceding Alfonso III.
Biography[]
Ordonno was born on 1 January 830 to Ranimiro I of Asturias, and was from the Visigothic Christian House of de Cantabria. Ordonno was named Governor of Galicia when his father went away to marry his second wife Paterna, and when King Alfonso II died while away, the nobles elected Count Nepociano as king. Ordonno defeated him at the Battle of the Bridge of Cornellana, and he assisted his father in becoming the new king. His father reigned from 842 until his death in 850, and Ordonno became the new king of Asturias. He fought the Basques and the Taifa of Zaragoza, and he also saved Vardulias from an attack by the Moors. In 859 he besieged and razed Albelda, but the Moors sacked Alava and defeated Count Rodrigo of Castile at Bureba, setting back the Reconquista for years. When he died in 866, Alfonso III of Asturias succeeded him.
