Operatio New Order occurred on 27 September 2024 when the Israeli Air Force dropped a 5,000-pound bunker buster on Hezbollah's central headquarters in Beirut's Dahieh suburb, targeting Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah.
Minutes after giving the United States advance warning, and after receiving approval from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he attended the United Nations in New York City, Israel's air force dropped a massive bomb on Hezbollah's central headquarters in Haret Hreik. Nasrallah was supposedly making a quick visit to Hezbollah headquarters at the time of the strike, and, though Hezbollah claimed that Nasrallah was "fine," most sources in Israeli intelligence expressed cautious optimism that Nasrallah had been killed. Iran's embassy in Lebanon said that the Israeli strike on Hezbollah headquarters represented a dangerous game-changing escalation that would bring its perpetrator "an appropriate punishment." On 28 September, Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah's death, while Israel claimed that Hezbollah Southern Front commander Ali Karki and other senior leaders were among the dead. Iran responded by threatening the deployment of its soldiers to Lebanon to fight the Israelis, just as it had done in 1981.
