Operation Favela Sweep was a favela clearance operation carried out by Brazilian BOPE operatives in 2016. The BOPE operatives were dispatched to clear out the Brazilian Militia members from the slum after there were reports of harassment of civilians; the first operative killed 24 of the gangsters before being killed; two civilians were killed when a barrel of gas exploded. Another operative was sent in to finish the job, and he killed the 30 remaining militants with no civilian losses. The operation eradicated the gang presence in the favela, but the gangs would later return.
