Operation Black Thunder (4 July 1968) was a United States military operation that occurred during the Vietnam War. The result was inconclusive, as the US failed to evict the North Vietnamese Army from Saigon.

Operation[]

A force of 300 North Vietnamese troops were sent to ambush US troops around the city of Saigon, so the United States MACV-SOG sent 300 troops to root them out and destroy them. The Americans fought the North Vietnamese in a portion of Saigon that was destroyed, with many buildings having holes in them and debris littering the streets. The Americans were ambushed from many sides, and although they could kill many NVA troops, they were eventually "defeated". 99 NVA and 100 US troops were killed, but the NVA were later forced to retreat.
