Operation Archangel was a covert operation undertaken by NATO's Rainbow special forces team to locate and extract the team's missing operative Taina "Caveira" Pereira, who had gone AWOL to rescue her brother Joao Pereira from the Santa Blanca Cartel in Bolivia.
Joao Pereira, an undercover agent with the Federal Police of Brazil, infiltrated the Santa Blanca Cartel in Bolivia as the United States launched Operation Kingslayer following the murder of their own undercover operative, DEA Agent Ricky Sandoval. When Pereira's cover was blown and he was subsequently kidnapped, his older sister Taina Pereira deserted her post and headed into Bolivia to find him. Rainbow operators Meghan J. Castellano and Emmanuelle Pichon were sent to Caimanes department to search for Caveira, while Major Anthony Perryman and his Ghost Recon team also became involved after receiving an alert message from an unknown source in Caimanes.
Perryman and his team stumbled across the site of a massacre; a truck loaded with banknotes was found crashed against a tree and several Santa Blanca sicarios dead around it. Perryman was put in touch with Castellano by his CIA contact Karen Bowman, and Castellano dispatched Pichon to the site of the attack so Rainbow could investigate the scene. Castellano was determined to stop the rogue operative from starting an international incident, and she dispatched Pichon and the Ghost Recon team to trace the vehicle back to the camp from which it had left. There, they found evidence of even more slaughter, and Perryman found a Santa Blanca lieutenant, Mer Rey Silva, locked in the radio station. There, he interrogated the lieutenant and discovered that "the Devil" was searching for "Dengoso", who had betrayed the Santa Blanca Cartel by stealing the truck full of money before being captured.
Shortly after, reinforcements the lieutenant had called in began to arrive, forcing the Ghost Recon team and Pichon to take cover and fend off intense attacks involving technicals, infantry and even helicopters. After the attack was beaten off, Pichon and the Ghosts parted ways, only to later reunite at Dengoso's apartment in Libertad department. There, they learned from Dengoso's answering machine that he had been an undercover policeman. As Dengoso was held prisoner by the cartel at a chemical institute, Pichon and the Ghosts rushed to the institute and found Caveira on her way to rescue her brother. The Rainbow and Ghost Recon teams stormed the facility and rescued Dengoso, although Rainbow violated Bowman's orders by immediately evacuating Dengoso from the country rather than interviewing him for information on the cartel.
