Onomichi is a city located in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Onomichi's port opened in 1168, and it served as a rice shipment center for the next 500 years, as well as a port for all trades with foreign countries. Onomichi's commercial significance somewhat wavered during the Tokugawa Shogunate, but Onomichi came to be Hiroshima Prefecture's second city in 1898. Onomichi grew in size throughout the 20th century due to annexations, and the city was a hub of shipbuilding for the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II, having an economy comparable to Hiroshima. Onomichi became home to the Kyodo-kai yakuza, the second-largest yakuza group in Chugoku after the Hiroshima-based Kyosei-kai. By 2023, Onomichi had a population of 129,314 people.
