Onesimos

Onesimos of Constantinople (10-68) was the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 54 to 68, succeeding Ecumenical Patriarch Stachys and preceding Ecumenical Patriarch Polykarpos I.

Biography[]

Onesimos was born in 10 AD to a family of Orthodox Christian Greeks, and he converted to the religion of his master Bishop Philemon of Colossae of Gaza after being converted by Saint Peter. He became bishop of Ephesus before he was consecrated as the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople on the death of Ecumenical Patriarch Stachys in 54 AD. During Nero's general persecution of Christianity, Onesimos was either stoned to death or beheaded.
