Omar Sharmarke (18 June 1960-) was Prime Minister of Somalia from 14 February 2009 to 21 September 2010 (succeeding Nur Hassan Hussein and preceding Abdiwahid Gonjeh) and from 24 December 2014 to 1 March 2017 (succeeding Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed and preceding Hassan Ali Khaire).
Biography[]
Omar Sharmarke was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1960, the son of Abdirashid Shermarke. He was orphaned at the age of nine, and he went to school in Canada while his family was living in exile in Virginia. He became involved in Somali politics after working with the United Nations, serving as Ambassador to the United Nations before serving as Prime Minister from 2009 to 2010 before being sacked by President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed. In 2014, he became Ambassador to the United States before returning to the premiership from 2014 to 2017, supporting closer ties with the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Qatar, Puntland, Sweden, and the USA.
