Omar Ismael Mostefai was born on November 21, 1985 in Courcouronnes, France, 20 miles south of Paris, to a father from a family of Sunni Muslim Algerians and a Portuguese mother who converted to Islam. In 2004 he acquired a criminal record (he also appeared in a rap video, one of the few - albeit vague - glimpses of his face) and was flagged as a radical Islamist in 2010, but he was never arrested by the French government. Mostefai was known as a nice person who played football with other workers at a bakery. He spent the winter of 2013-2014 fighting alongside the Islamic State during the Syrian Civil War before returning home to France, where he was one of the returning fighters who planned to carry out attacks at home. Mostefai took part in the November 2015 Paris attacks with seven other terrorists. Along with Samy Amimour and Foued Mohamed-Aggad, he was one of the gunmen at the Bataclan theatre, where the terrorists took hostages and killed 87 people. He detonated his suicide vest when police arrived and engaged in a shootout, and he was identified by his severed finger.
