Ollanta Humala

Ollanta Humala (27 June 1962-) was President of Peru from 28 July 2011 to 28 July 2016, succeeding Alan Garcia and preceding Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

Biography[]

Ollanta Humala was born in Lima, Peru in 1962 to a Quechua family; his father Isaac Humala was a leader of the fascist Ethnocacerist movement, while his mother was of Italian descent. He joined the Peruvian Army in 1981 and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel while battling Shining Path communists and fighting in the Cenepa War with Ecuador. In 2000, he led a failed coup against Alberto Fujimori, but he was amnestied by Congress. He founded the Peruvian Nationalist Party in 2005, and he lost the 2006 presidential election to Alan Garcia by a narrow margin. He was ultimately elected in 2011, and he presided over a centrist cabinet that tolerated unsustainable mining and was plagued by corruption scandals, including ones surrounding Humala and his wife Nadine Heredia. He left office in 20176and was arrested for corruption a year later; he received only 1.5% of the vote in the 2021 presidential election.
