Oliver Hampton Smith (23 October 1794 – 19 March 1859) was a member of the US House of Representatives (W-IN 3) from 4 March 1827 to 3 March 1829 (interrupting John Test's terms) and a US Senator from 4 March 1837 to 3 March 1843 (succeeding William Hendricks and preceding Edward A. Hannegan).
Biography[]
Oliver Hampton Smith was born in Upper Makefield Township, Pennsylvania in 1794, and he settled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana in 1818. He became a lawyer in Connersville in 1820, and he served in the state legislature and as a state attorney before serving in the US House of Representatives from 1827 to 1829 and in the US Senate from 1837 to 1843. He then went on to engage in the railroad industry before dying in Indianapolis in 1859.
