Oleg of Novgorod

Oleg of Novgorod (850-912), born Helgi Ruriksson, was Grand Prince of the Kievan Rus from 879 to 912, succeeding Rurik and preceding Igor of Kiev.

Biography[]

Helgi Ruriksson was born in 850, the son of the Varangian chieftain Rurik and the brother of Yngvar. His father entrusted him to take care of his newly-established principality at Novgorod upon his death in 879, and Helgi took control of the Dnieper cities and made Kiev his capital, establishing the Kievan Rus. In 907, he raided the Byzantine capital of Constantinople, and he died in 912. He was succeeded by his younger brother Yngvar (Igor).
