Olafur

Olafur (died 793) was a Norwegian Viking who served as the executioner of Kattegat during the 9th century AD.

Biography[]

Olafur was born in Kattegat, Norway, and he served as a bodyguard and executioner for Earl Haraldson. In 793 AD, he executed Eric Trygvasson for murder, and Haraldson later sent Olafur to spy on Ragnarr Lodbrok, as he was suspicious of Ragnar's plans to defy his orders and raid west instead of east. Olafur reported Ragnar's construction of longships to Haraldson, but, while reporting to his lord, he became attracted to his lord's wife Siggy. The Earl granted Olafur permission to sleep with his wife if he wished, only to have his steward Svein stab him dead after he entered Siggy's bed; Haraldson had given Olafur "permission" as a means of testing his loyalty. He then had his body cut to pieces.
