Olaf the White

Olaf the White (830-874), also known as Amlaib Conung, was the Viking King of Dyflin from 855 to 873, preceding Barid mac Imair.

Biography[]

Olaf the White was the son of Ingjald Helgasson, and he became King of Dyflin in 853, ruling jointly with his kinsman Ivar the Boneless. During the late 850s and early 860s, he fought against the Irish king Mael Sechnaill mac Maele Ruanaid, competing for control of Munster and its resources. He allied with Aed Findliath to defeat Mael Sechnaill, who died in 862. Olaf then fought against several Irish rulers in attempts to expand his borders, and he also led several raids into Scotland. In 874, he died in battle against Constantine I of Scotland at Atholl.
