Olaf III of Norway

Olaf III of Norway (1050-22 September 1093) was King of Norway from 28 April 1069 to 22 September 1093, succeeding Magnus II and preceding Haakon Magnusson.

Biography[]

Olav Haraldsson was born in Norway in 1050, the son of Harald Hardrada and Tora Torbergsdatter. He accompanied his father on his invasion of England in 1066, but he stayed with the Norwegian fleet at the time of the Battle of Stamford Bridge and thus survived the defeat, in which his father was killed. Olaf and the Norwegian fleet returned to Orkney before sailing back to Norway, and Olaf became co-ruler of Norway with his brother Magnus II before succeeding his brother on his death in 1069. Olaf made peace with King Sweyn Estridsson of Denmark and King William the Conqueror of England, and he also mended his family's relations with the Catholic Church and strengthened Norway's guilds. He died in 1093.
