The Oirats are the westernmost group of Mongols in the present-day country of Mongolia. The Oirats originated in Central Asia, but they later spread to neighboring regions, with the Kalmyks of Russia and Dzungars of China claiming descent from the Oirats. In 2010, 205,000 lived in Mongolia, 183,372 in Russia, and 250,000 in China.
