Odo of France (859-1 January 898) was King of West Francia from 887 to 898, succeeding Charles the Fat and preceding Charles the Simple.
Biography[]
Odo was born in 859, the eldest son of Robert the Strong and Adelaide of Tours and brother of the future Robert I of France. Odo inherited the title Marquis of Neustria from his father on his death in 866, and in 882 he also became Count of Paris. In 885, Count Odo of Paris defended Paris from the Vikings, becoming a hero for his efforts in fighting against the Norsemen and defending France from foreign invasion. In 887, Odo was chosen as the new King of France after the death of the unpopular Charles the Fat, and he was crowned at Compeigne in 888. Odo had to fight against nobles who supported Charles the Simple in taking power and, despite Odo paying tribute to Arnulf of Carinthia, Arnulf decided to side with Charles. Odo died in 898, and Charles succeeded him.
