Obaidullah Akhund

Obaidullah Akhund (died 5 March 2010) was the Minister of Defense of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. He led resistance to Afghanistan and the United States afterwards, but was captured in 2007 and died in jail of a heart disease.

Biography[]

Maulana Obaidullah Akhund was born in Panjwai in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, and became Defense Minister of the Taliban in the 1990s. When the Taliban took power in 1996 he became the same title, except representing the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. He was one of few people with direct access to Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Emir of the country. Akhund surrendered to Northern Alliance and United States troops in 2001 and was releaseda year later in amnesty, but was captured in 2007 when he fled to Quetta, Pakistan.

In 2010, Akhund died in Karachi in a prison of a heart disease.
