Nyasaland was a British protectorate that existed from 1907 to 1964, with Zomba serving as its capital. The colony replaced the British Central Africa Protectorate, and African communal lands were seized and given to the white elites. However, the great education system of Nyasaland led to the educated African majority voicing its demands for independence after the 1930s, and civil agitation increased after the formation of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953. In 1964, Hastings Benda led the country to independence as Malawi.
