The Nuwaubian Nation is an African-American new religious movement which was founded by Dwight York in Georgia in 1970. The nation was initially a putatively Islamic group, but it soon shifted towards Afrocentric Ancient Egypt themes, which York combined with Black nationalism, cryptozoology, UFO religion, and conspiracy theories. The movement claimed that Black people were indigenous to the Americas "before the settlers from Europe came to these shores spreading their way of life, their filth, and religion," with York himself also stating, "White people are the devil. They say the Nuwaubians are not racist – bullcrap! I am…White people are devils — always was, always will be." York also gave a speech against Christmas, in which he also said, "Christianity is merely a tool used by the Devil (Paleman) to keep you, the Nubian (Black) man, woman, and child blind to your true heritage and perfect way of life (Islam). It is another means of slavery." The group was initially anchored in Bushwick, Brooklyn during the 1970s, during which it had 500 members living in 20 apartment buildings. In the late 1980s, the Nuwaubians abandoned Islam in favor of Kemetism, and, after a brief spell in Upstate New York, the movement moved to the "Tama-Re" compound in Putnam County, Georgia in 1991. In 2004, York was sentenced to 135 years in prison for raping a child, and the compound was sold under government forfeiture and demolished.
The Nuwaubian Nation was also involved in local politics in Georgia, failing in its attempt to take control of the NAACP, and also failing to run several of their members as Republican office-seekers (including for Sheriff) in 2001.
