Nury Martinez

Nury Martinez (9 July 1973-) was the Democratic President of the Los Angeles City Council from 5 January 2020 to 10 October 2022, succeeding Mitchell Englander and preceding Joe Buscaino.

Biography[]

Nury Martinez was born in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California in 1973, and she ran a support group for women with AIDS before becoming a special assistant to State Senator Alex Padilla and becoming executive direct of an environmental justice organization. She served on the San Fernando City Council from 2003 to 2009, on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education from 2009 to 2013, on the Los Angeles City Council from 2013, and as President of the Los Angeles City Council from 2020 to 2022. She was accused of submitting fradulent donor information in order to receive $65,360 in taxpayer-matched funds in 2015, and, on 10 October 2022, she resigned as President of the Los Angeles City Council after she disparaged District Attorney George Gascon for siding "with the Blacks", Councilman Mike Bonin's adoptive Black child (whom she called a "little monkey" and wished to beat for alleged misbehavior during a parade), and darker-skinned Oaxacan immigrants who lived in Koreatown. On 11 October, President Joe Biden, among others, called for her to resign from the City Council as well. She proceeded to resign from the City Council on 12 October.
