Nunavut is the northernmost territory of Canada, with Iqaluit serving as its capital. The region separated from the Northwest Territories in 1999 as a part of a deal with the native Inuit people, who wanted autonomy from the rest of the NWT. Nunavut includes both land on the mainland of North America as well as Baffin Island, Ellesmere Islands, and many others, stretching as far north as the Arctic near Greenland. In 2017, Nunavut had a population of 37,280 people.
