Numerian (255-November 284) was Roman emperor from 282 to November 284, succeeding his father Carus and preceding Carinus, his co-emperor and brother.
Biography[]
Marcus Aurelius Numerianus was born in 255, the son of Carus. In 282, he was made caesar when his father became Roman emperor, and he accompanied his father on his very successful campaign against the Sassanids in Mesopotamia. When his father died, Numerian and his brother Carinus were crowned co-emperors, and Numerian ruled the eastern half of the empire as Carinus ruled the west. However, he had inflammation of the eyes while moving to Emesa in Roman Syria (present-day Homs, Syria), and he died in his curtained coach as he moved further west.
