Norway is a country located in the Scandinavia region of northern Europe, with its capital at Oslo. Norway was united under Harald Fairhair in 872, and Norway would become a major country in the region during the Viking Age. In 1035, Norway added the Faroe Islands to its empire, then Greenland in 1261, Iceland in 1262, and Shetland and Orkney until 1468. Norway was in union with Denmark for hundreds of years, starting 1397 and ending in 1814, when it would enter union with Sweden for 89 years. Norway would adopt a market economy and a welfare system, combining state capitalism and socialism, and Norway became the largest oil producer outside the Middle East. In 2016, Norway had a population of 5,214,900 people.
