The Republic of North Ossetia-Alania is a federal subject of Russia, with the city of Vladikavkaz serving as its capital. The republic was established on 5 December 1936 as the "North Ossetian ASSR", and the name "North Ossetia" was combined with the name of the historical region of Alania to form the name of the new republic. The republic is located in the North Caucasus, and Ossetians made up the majority of the population. In 2010, North Ossetia had a population of 712,980 people.
