
Norman Howard Bangerter (4 January 1933-14 April 2015) was the Republican Governor of Utah from 7 January 1985 to 4 January 1993, succeeding Scott M. Matheson and preceding Mike Leavitt.
Biography[]
Norman Howard Bangerter was born in West Valley City, Utah in 1933, the brother of William Grant Bangerter. He founded a successful construction firm before serving in the state house from 1975 to 1985 and as Governor from 1985 to 1993, becoming the state's first Republican governor since 1965. His foremost interest was improving the state's education system, and he also dealt with the Great Salt Lake's flooding by building pumps to channel excess water to the Bonneville Salt Flats. He went on to preside over the LDS Church's Johannesburg mission from 1996 to 1999, and he died in 2015.
