The Nord department is a department in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France, with Lille serving as its capital. Nord was acquired from Spain by treaties in 1659, 1668, and 1678, and it was one of the original 83 departments to be formed in 1790 during the French Revolution. The French government implemented French as the sole official language, leading to a decline in the usage of West Flemish. Nord was a conservative-dominated department during the 21st century, and it had a population of 2,608,346 people in 2019.
