The Noche Septembrina was an assassination attempt on Gran Colombian leader Simon Bolivar which occurred on the night of 25 September 1828 in Bogota, Colombia. Bolivar's main opponent, Francisco de Paula Santander, sent three dozen soldiers under Pedro Carujo to storm the Presidential Palace, and they killed the guards. However, Bolivar's lover Manuela Saenz told him to jump out of the window, and Bolivar managed to escape on foot. Following the failed coup attempt, Santander was sentenced to death, but Bolivar pardoned him and instead banished him. The failed coup harmed the sectarian relations between the New Granadines and Venezuelans, and Gran Colombia dissolved three years later.
