Noble Richards (1780-1852) was an American planter from South Carolina.
Biography[]
Noble Richards was born in Kingstree, South Carolina in 1780, the son of Charles Richards, the owner of the "Ricardopolis" plantation. Richards inherited his family's estate in 1813 and grew rice and cotton, becoming a wealthy planter. Richards affiliated himself with the Democratic-Republican Party due to his idolization of Thomas Jefferson, and his strong constitutional conservatism resulted in his dislike for the Whigs and his suspicion of Andrew Jackson. Nevertheless, Richards became a Democrat in 1828 and served in the State Senate from 1830 to 1836, staunchly opposing secession during the Nullification Crisis. He died in 1852.
