Noah Noble

Noah Noble (15 January 1794-8 February 1844) was the Whig Governor of Indiana from 7 December 1831 to 6 December 1837, succeeding James B. Ray and preceding David Wallace.

Biography[]

Noah Noble was born in Berryville, Virginia in 1794, and he was raised in Campbell County and Boone County, Kentucky before moving to Brookville, Indiana in 1811, following his brother James Noble. Noble became involved in land speculation and milling, and he entered politics in 1820 and served as Sheriff of Franklin County from 1820 to 1824, in the state house from 1823 to 1834, and as Governor from 1831 to 1837. Noble supported internal improvements, but his taxing recommendations were not fully enacted, leading to the state negotiating a partial bankruptcy a few years later and causing the gradual collapse of the Whig party in the state; the Democrats ruled the state until the middle of the American Civil War. He failed to implement his projects while on the Board of Internal Improvement, and he died in Indianapolis in 1844.
