Nita Lowey

Nita Lowey (5 July 1937-15 March 2025) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NY 20) from 1989 to 1993 (succeeding Joseph DioGuardi and preceding Benjamin Gilman), from NY 18 from 1993 to 2013 (succeeding Jose E. Serrano and preceding Sean Patrick Maloney), and from NY 17 from 2013 to 3 January 2021 (succeeding Eliot Engel and preceding Mondaire Jones).

Biography[]

Nita Sue Melnikoff was born in The Bronx, New York City, New York in 1937, and she served as a government official before becoming Assistant Secretary of State of New York and being elected to the US House of Representatives in 1988. She was a champion of the middle class, and she was a strong supporter and close friend of Hillary Clinton. On 10 October 2019, she decided not to seek re-election in 2020.
