
Nino Konis Santana (12 January 1957-11 March 1998) was the leader of the East Timorese FRETILIN militia from April 1993 to March 1998, succeeding Ma'huno Bulerek Karathayano and preceding Taur Matan Ruak.
Biography[]
Nino Konis Santana was born on 12 January 1957 in Vero, Portuguese Timor to a Catholic family, and he joined the FALINTIL armed wing of FRETILIN to resist the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. In April 1993, he took over the leadership of FRETILIN from Ma'huno Bulerek Karathayano after Karathayano was captured, and he was killed in an Indonesian Army ambush in 1998 when he was shot in the leg.
