Nils Boe

Nils Andreas Boe (10 September 1913-30 July 1992) was the Republican Governor of South Dakota from 5 January 1965 to 7 January 1969, succeeding Archie M. Gubbrud and preceding Frank Farrar.

Biography[]

Nils Andreas Boe was born in Baltic, South Dakota in 1913, the son of Norwegian immigrants. He served as a US Navy lieutenant during World War II before serving in the state legislature (representing Sioux Falls) from 1953 to 1958, as Lieutenant Governor from 1962 to 1965, as Governor from 1965 to 1969, as a Customs Court judge from 1971 to 1980, and Judge of the Court of International Trade from 1980 to 1984. As Governor, he improved the state's reservoir system, enacted a worker training program to attract new industry to the state, increased state aid to schools, and created a retirement program for state employees. He died in Sioux Falls in 1992.
