Nikolaus von Talsen

Nikolaus von Talsen (1223-1257) was a Captain of the Teutonic Order who commanded a Teutonic army during the Northern Crusades of the 13th century. In 1255, he led a Teutonic army into Novgorodian-held Belarus and encamped outside of Vitebsk, offending its garrison. In 1257, Prince Vasilii of Belogorod attacked the Teutonic army, and, in the ensuing Battle of Vitebsk, his army was annihilated and he was killed. His army's remnants, led by Andreas, fled back to western Belarus.
