Nicolae Timofti (22 December 1948-) was President of Moldova from 23 March 2012 to 23 December 2016, succeeding Marian Lupu and preceding Igor Dodon.
Biography[]
Nicolae Timofti was born in Ciutulesti, Moldavian SSR, Soviet Union in 1948, and he was raised in Floresti. He served in the Soviet Army before becoming a judge in 1976, and, according to Mihai Ghimpu, he was a supporter of democratic reform from the movement's inception in the 1990s. In 2012, he was elected President of Moldova by the Parliament, and he pursued progressive policies and supported integration into the European Union. He served as President for four years, serving as an independent.
