Newport is a town in New Castle County, Delaware. It was inhabited by the Susquehannock Native Americans until the first land grant for the area was awarded to the Duke of York in 1641. In 1731, the town was designed as a commercial crossroads and port, and it became a center of commerce in the early 19th century. However, Wilmington replaced Newport as the most important commercial center of Delaware after the 1830s. Newport was incorporated in 1873 and became a manufacturing center with chemical works, glue factories, and iron works. In 2016, Newport had a population of 1,050 people.
