Biography[]
Newman Haynes Clanton was born in Davidson County, Tennessee in 1816, and he became a slave-holder and planter before moving the family to Missouri. He tried gold mining in California before moving to Dallas, Texas in 1853 and ranching for a time. Newman and his oldest son John joined the Confederate Honor Guard at the start of the American Civil War, but Newman was released due to his age. At the end of the war, the family moved west to Wilcox, Arizona, San Buenaventura, California, Port Hueneme, California, and then to Cochise County, Arizona. His sons Ike and Billy Clanton joined the Cochise County Cowboys and took part in the gang's feud with the Earps in 1881, resulting in Billy being killed at the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. "Old Man" Clanton himself took part in cattle raids across the Mexican border, stealing cattle from Sonora and bringing them back Tombstone to sell them in town. He took part in the Skeleton Canyon Massacre of Mexican smugglers, so Mexican rural police ambushed and killed him and a group of cowboys in Guadalupe Canyon, Arizona Territory in August 1881.
