Newark is the most populous city of New Jersey and the county seat of Essex County. The city is one of the United States' major air, shipping, and rail hubs, and it is home to the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal and Newark Liberty International Airport. The city was settled in 1666 by Puritans from New Haven, Connecticut (named for Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England), and it was one of the oldest European cities in America. In 1693, Newark became a township, and it became a city in 1836. It saw tremendous industrial and population growth during the late 19th century and 20th century, but it experienced racial tension and urban decline in the second half of the 20th century, culminating in the 1967 Newark riots. The city, which was known as the most dangerous city in the country in 1996, experienced revitalization beginning in the 1990s, and the city passed anti-gentrification laws in 2018. In 2015, Newark had a population of 281,944 people.
