The New Zealand Labor Party is a social democratic political party in New Zealand, founded on 7 July 1916 by various socialist parties and trade unions. The party focused on employing every New Zealander, investing in public education and health care, and improving social security and welfare. The party held power from 1935 to 1949, from 1957 to 1960, from 1972 to 1975, from 1984 to 1990, and from 1999 to 2008, and it established a welfare state, privatized state assets, and reduced the role of the state in the economy (the latter two being unusual moves for a left-wing party). The Labor Party rivaled the New Zealand National Party for power, and it held 32/131 House of Representatives seats in 2016.
