New York is one of the fifty states of the United States, located on the East Coast. The state is home to the most-populous city of America, New York City, and it has landmarks such as Niagara Falls, Albany, the Statue of Liberty, and many universities. New York was named for the Duke of York, the future James II of England, after England conquered the region from the United Provinces' New Netherland region in 1664, and the state became one of the most important colonies, with New York City and Albany being two major American cities. During the Industrial Revolution, New York was one of the most industrialized states, and New York City emerged as the commercial center of the United States during the 19th century. In 2015, New York had a population of 19,795,791, with 65.7% being whites, 15.9% African-Americans, 7.3% Asian-Americans, 3% multiracial, .6% Native Americans, and 7.5% other.
