New South Wales is a state on the east coast of Australia, with Sydney serving as its capital. The state borders Queensland to the north, Victoria to the south, and South Australia to the west, and it is the most populous state of Australia. New South Wales was founded as a penal colony of Great Britain in 1788, and it was named after the region of South Wales in Wales. In 1856, a responsible government was established in New South Wales, which became a state of Australia on 1 January 1901. In 2016, New South Wales had a population of 7,797,800 people.
